Presentation of the ILCB/Iméra Chair – Language, Communication, and the Brain
As part of the Interdisciplinary Explorations program, Iméra offers a chair in collaboration with the Institute of Language, Communication, and the Brain (ILCB). The ILCB’s research focuses on the brain and cognitive foundations of language and communication.
Interdisciplinary research at ILCB is divided into 4 research programs:
- Development and evolution, focusing on the origin of language in individuals and different animal species.
- Neural and cognitive dynamics of language and conversation, with a focus on the dynamics enabling communication.
- Quantification and mathematical modeling of dynamic neural and cognitive phenomena.
- Language pathologies and their treatment.
Applications may concern any of these 4 research areas and should preferably involve collaboration between different ILCB research units.
About the chair partner
The ILCB (Institute of Language, Communication, and the Brain) comprises 10 research units (LPL, LPC, INS, INT, LNC, ISM, LIS, LIA, I2M, PRISM) and 8 experimental platforms (fMRI, MEG, EEG, TMS, primatology, virtual reality, baby lab, speech experimentation center).
It brings together around 200 permanent researchers across the Aix-Marseille-Avignon site. Its scientific project focuses on the brain and cognitive foundations of language and communication. ILCB integrates knowledge from various disciplines: linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, computer science, mathematics, and medicine.
It aims to study language production and perception not only in controlled contexts but also to open new perspectives for studying its use in more natural settings. ILCB also offers support for experiments with a dedicated data analysis and processing service, comprising 5 scientific computing and experimentation engineers.
